The Ghostly Re-Enactment of the Battle of Edge Hill
The Christmas of 1642 was a frightening one for several shepherds who were making their way home past the battlefield at around midnight. first came the sound of drums, then the clanking of weaponry and armour, followed by the murmurs and moans of the wounded and dying. The shepherds were frozen solid with fear and were just about gaining the courage to move when the images of the fighting began to appear around them, men killing each other, soldiers on horseback, the whole bloody battle, replayed before their eyes.
After three hours when the fighting finally died away, they made haste to the nearest town, and woke the man of authority and told him the story; he agreed to accompany the men to the same spot the next night. During the day though, news spread of the event, and by the time nightfall arrived, a crowd had gathered.
They were not to be disappointed, and sure enough, the battle was to materialise again, in all its gory might, leaving the locals afraid they had enraged god, and he was bringing justice to them.
News reached King Charles, and he sent two men of standing to witness the events. These two men had actually fought at, and survived the battle. The image was again to manifest itself and the men were satisfied with what they had seen, and recognised events, and the ghostly soldiers who were replaying them.
Over the years the manifestations drew weaker and eventually died out, however, its still reported to this day that the sounds of the battle can still be heard from time to time, just to remind people of the events that took place there, and those who died.
