THUNDRIDGE CHURCH

Hertfordshire, England

Thundridge church in Hertfordshire, some times known as Cold Christmas Church dates back to 1086 it was a private church sited on the local estate. In 1853 a new Parish Church was built in Thundridge and much of the old church materials were used all apart from the 15th Century Tower which was left intact along with the graveyard. As with St Mary's Church in Clop hill in Bedfordshire there have been many rumours of the Church being built on a North to South alignment instead of East to West.

Locals have reported witchcraft, vandalism and desecration at the church. In 1978 a terrified local woman reported a ghost army marching out of the church. According to her report the ghost army let out a blood-curdling roar and marched straight through the poor woman.

A common report is that of a ghostly growl that echoes out from the tower. Reports of the noise became so frequent that in January 2009 the local East Herts Herald sent a camera crew and journalist to investigate. A ghostly figure in a black robe has been seen in the grave yard moving silently between the tombs.

At Halloween the police are reported to close the lane, there are also stories of someone failing to their death from the old staircase that now leads directly out on to a floorless room.

My friend and I travelled to St Mary's church Cold Christmas in Autumn about 12 yrs ago. My friend James knew of the area as having a history of sightings, satanic activity and unhallowed ground.

We arrived finally and felt anxious as soon as we got out of the car, it was a grey overcast day, bleak except for a few black sheep in a neighbouring field walking around.

We walked around the grounds inspecting the inscriptions on the old tower confirming its satanic past. We read some of the names and inscription on the graves, most were overgrown.

I realised as we walked the church that you could hear a pin drop, no breeze, not even a bird chirping. We did giggle a bit and tried to heighten the fear in each other by letting each other know we felt uncomfortable.

There was no entry into the tower itself, it was boarded up. We walked to what I believe is the North of the church via the pathway to get one final view of the church. No sooner had we walked 20 metres or so we decided to head back to the car as we felt too weird. As we turned around we were greeted by a man and woman. They smiled and were friendly. We had not heard them approach nor seen anyone pull up.

The couple appeared to be in there 30's, they wore very odd clothes straight from the 70's. The man wore a brown suit with large lapels and a shirt with large 70's collars. The woman also wore a typical domestic nylon 70's dress and seemed bedraggled. At the present time in the late 90's their attire seemed to be out of place. The two stood about 4 metres or so from us and talked as if they were local to the area pointing to where they lived, being in the direction of the church. My friend and I made polite conversation about the place and not much was said by them in terms of the churches history.

As we parted we walked passed them to go to the car and we walked briskly as we were unsure of the situation. We both turned around no more than a few seconds after passing them and they had disappeared. There was no where for them to go to unless they ran way! Could they have been ghosts? They seemed so like real living people but we didn't shake hands and they vanished as quickly as they arrived.
