Strange Occurences at the Farmhouse-November 2006, Part 4

Dear Ghost-story.co.uk,

Once again many thanks for posting my accounts on the site and for the kind and helpful emails I have received from your visitors. Things have been very strange over the last few days and I am beginning to get seriously concerned. Many of the emails I received suggested researching the house and land or speaking with the previous occupants. Researching the land is difficult and I would welcome any suggestions on how to do this. There is nothing on the internet and I genuinely do not know where else to look- the land and area are pretty unremarkable. I have spoken with our estate agent about the people we bought the property from. He has said that the owners never lived here at all, they bought the property at auction and had contractors renovate it before they sold it on to us. I have asked our agent to see if he can find out anything more about the last people to live here and he has said he will get back to me.

I have been listening hard at night and I have heard voices on a number of occasions. I am convinced that there are two voices and they are coming from the kitchen or the room that will be our dining room. The first voice is the easiest to hear, it is quite monotonous. The second voice I have only heard two or three times. It is louder and always very brief, and it tends to shut the other one up for a while- sometimes the whole night. This voice does not seem to be saying anything, it is more a yelp of protestation. The first voice is deep and definitely male, the second is either a child or a woman. Both are very, very feint but I can definitely hear them and more importantly, for my sanity, I can hear silence when they are gone.

There is also something strange about the telephone. I am aware that this could be nothing and I have considered the more obvious possibilty that this is a problem with the line, or the exchange or anything. We have portable handsets and I have wireless broadband installed, but there is a phone that was here when we moved in, and it is an old dial type. I might have removed it if it didn't have a rustic charm and if the cable didn't go directly into the wall with no socket. When it rings the handsets and the base station ring too because they are wired in to the socket in the kitchen. A couple of days ago the phone rang in the evening briefly, but the others did not. When I went to pick it up it stopped. Since then it has rung a couple of times, but incredibly briefly, not even a full ring. It seems really trivial, and it makes me think I am getting paranoid, which I certainly am, but it is really frightening.

John
