Strange Occurences at the Farmhouse-November 2006, Part 2
Dear Ghost-story.co.uk,
I saw that you put my story up on your site recently. I read it again the other day and thought you might want to hear an update, as there have been some other occurrences and I have become absolutely convinced that there is something in our house.
After the incident with my workbench there were quite a few weeks of nothing happening at all. To be honest I had felt that I should not have bothered documenting the first account at all, and that it was just the frayed nerves caused by the move and 'new life' materialising. I had been working on the house late into the night and still working a full week, I was certainly feeling the strain. But one night last week another thing happened.
Kate was away over the weekend and on Sunday night Gemma and I watched Lord of the Rings. It is important you realise that I know for a fact that I locked the house up before I put the movie on. Because the house gets cold, I always lock up after we eat in the evening and with the front door that is one key and one slide bolt. I lay on the sofa and she lay beside me. Because it was a long film and I have seen it before I inevitably dozed off. I woke to the incessant repetitive DVD menu music and Gemma was asleep beside me. I picked her up and we brushed our teeth and I put her to bed and went to bed myself.
I woke up again and it was still dark, I realised that I was freezing cold. It was as though there was a window open in the room. There seemed to be an obvious breeze, I have slept in that room many times and it is usually just fine, but this time it was obvious to me that something was open. I got up, put my Sunday slob clothes back on and went in to the hall. Gemma's room was still closed and the light was off. When I got to the bedroom door although it was closed, the door was rattling slightly in the breeze. I opened the door and went downstairs. The light switch is at the bottom of the stairs so I flicked it on and the front door was wide open. There were leaves all over the kitchen floor and the wind was howling through the door. I went straight over and closed the front door.
Despite the scare of the other week I had honestly not considered anything paranormal at this point, I had thought that Kate had come home and left the door open momentarily. I went to the door, put on my sandals and stepped outside. It was dark and the wind was blowing a gale, Kate's car was not around but she sometimes parked it in the largest outbuilding because it has a large sliding door and keeps it dry. Sure enough the barn door was open about ten feet. I walked up to the barn and looked inside. Even through the gloom it was obvious that there was no car in there. All at once I filled with fear. I had been sleepy and warm when I got out of bed, and any part of me that had not been woken when that cold wind hit me was definitely roused now. I was wide awake and completely terrified. Kate was not due back and it had only been my happy assumptions that made the connection with her. I looked into the barn again, I don't know what I was looking for now. Intruders? The barn was still and looked empty enough I then scanned the windows of the house from my position just inside the barn door. Everything seemed still then suddenly the front door caught the wind and slammed shut. At almost the exact same moment I saw my bedroom light switch on.
I ran to the front door and pushed it but it held fast, I threw my shoulder against it and it opened about a foot and I had to really push hard at it to open it enough to get through. The force of the wind on the door was enormous and it slammed again behind me when I squeezed through. I ran upstairs and into our room. The light was on and Gemma was cowering under the quilt on our bed. She was bawling and crying, saying that she had a bad dream and when she got up to see me I wasn't there. I comforted her and she slept beside me as I lay awake. I have been lying awake at night quite a lot recently. In the morning I went downstairs first while Gemma watched TV in bed .
The front door was shut and the bolt was across. I realise that this sounds stupid and I realise that many people who read this will think that I am a liar, or crazy, but this really happened and it happened the weekend before last as I write this. The front door was closed, the bolt was across and the key must have been turned from the inside because the door was locked by key as well. There were leaves all over the kitchen floor but the front door, the door that I let slam behind me before I went upstairs, was completely secure.
I am a rational chap. I do not change my opinions easily and I have always looked upon the paranormal as a paranoid version of the much more obvious explanation. I have thought on this every day since and although it is possible that there are rational sequences of events that could have conspired to scare me half to death that night, right now, they seem less believable than the alternative. With any luck, whatever may reside here in this house with us is simply mischievous and wanted to make itself known. I have been trying to talk with it lately, projecting my thoughts, begging it to let us be. I have no intention of moving house and I am still hopeful of a satisfactory explanation. Non-paranormal explanations welcomed.
John
