Strange Occurences at the Farmhouse-October 2006
Dear Ghost-Story.co.uk,
I have been recently searching the internet for ghost stories around my local area and stumbled across you site. I thought you might want to share this story with you readers. Just so my wife doesn't get annoyed if she finds this, I've changed their names.
My wife an I have recently sold our business in London and moved to Somerset so, amongst other reasons, my daughter can begin schooling away from the city. We have bought a nice sized farmhouse for what we thought was a bit of a bargain, although there is plenty of work to be done before it becomes a home. We currently spend the majority of our time in just two rooms and there are still several outbuildings that I have yet to even visit. My wife has been convinced since the first night we stayed here that there is some kind of presence in the house. Until this week I was sure that it was just the move and the emptiness of the house, as we had quite a small place in London and we don't yet have enough furniture to fill a quarter of the rooms.
A few nights ago my wife, Kate, and I were sleeping and we were awoken about midnight to the sound of a tremendous crash downstairs. We had been burgled twice in London, once whilst we slept and that was my first thought. My first reaction was to remain still, we didn't have much of value in the house and I figured that I didn't want to get my head blown off for the sake of Kate's mums dinner set so I sat and listened for any more sounds. Kate had been woken at the exact same time as me and was just sat there wide-eyed. I slid out of bed and pressed my ear to the floorboards, but I couldn't hear anything. My daughter sleeps in the next room so I crept over to the door and opened it, but she was thankfully still asleep. Her room was only accessible from ours so I closed the door again. My golf bag was handy so I selected my nine iron and sat back on the bed. Kate and I sat up for the next three hours, and we never heard anything else. Kate wanted to wait until morning but I figured, if it was burglars they would have gone by now and it could have been something falling over. Our master plan consisted of setting my alarm clock for 3am and then waking up and getting ready in the noisiest possible way and turn on all the lights, like we had some kind of early start.
So I stomped around, got dressed and flicked on all the lights- I even brushed my teeth. Then Kate and I went downstairs, me carrying a nine iron and her my putter. There was nobody down there. Every door, and every window was shut and bolted. By this time we had woken Gemma up and she was very tired and grouchy. When Kate was happy that all the doors were locked she took Gemma up to bed. I was working from home the next day, but Kate has to be out of the house by 7am to get her train so I sent her to bed too. I had a sneaky cigarette out of the front door and decided to have another quick check around the house before turning in myself. The next room we are hoping to finish is the sitting room. It is right in the centre of the house and there is nothing really in there at the moment as it is in the process of being painted; when I have the time. I decided that my work bench may have fallen over and made the noise so I decided to check this room before I went to bed.
When I turned on the light I could see that my work bench was not in its usual place but on the other side of the room. I know where it had been because I had just finished painting the chimney section that evening. The bench was literally twenty feet away, upside down against the opposite wall. I have never believed in anything paranormal before but I double-checked all the doors and windows again and the house was totally secure. Either the worlds most careful burglar had broken into our house, walked past two sets of car keys and my wallet and then thrown my workbench across the room and silently slipped out, or my wife was right and there is something in our house. I decided against telling Kate any of this and simply tidied up and went to bed. I have absolutely no real idea what happened that night and it has been playing on my mind ever since. I would be grateful if you could post this story on your website, and I wonder if any of your readers might have some advice for dealing with this, if it really is some kind of ghost. I dare not tell anyone I work with and I know if Kate or Gemma ever found out we may have to consider moving again. It is a big help just to write this down and I will of course keep you posted if anything else should occur.
Thanks
John
