I'm an American, and read this tale when I was very young from a book about ghosts. It was entitled "The Nameless Horror of Berkley Square", and it truly terrified me. The account I read is similar to the one told here, however, in the version I read, the horror acutally murdered the victims by twisting and breaking their necks. The maid and Kenfeild were both found dead with their necks broken as well as the sailor.
The sailor that survived the attack claimed to have heard a sound like an animal clawing up the stairway where he and his friend were sleeping in the room. They awoke to see the appiration pass through the closed door and hang motionless for a moment. He described the ghost as a shapelss cloud of vapor with two hideous claw-like hands protruding from the mist. One sailor grabbed a log from the fireplace and began swinging wildly at the ghost, but it quickly sprung on him and attacked his throat. The second sailor ran from the house hearing his friend's screams behind him and then fell unconcious on the sidewalk outside.
I remeber being kept awake many nights from thinking about this story. Even more chilling was an artist's rendition of what the sailor had described seeing in the room. I wish I could remember the name of the book to tell you but unfortunately it has left my memory. I still remember the artist's image vividly though, and I still get chills when I think upon it.
