This tale was retold by the brother of Charles Rackham:
"During the latter part of the 1920's Charles and a friend were cycling along the Epping Road, near Epping Forest when they heard the sound of horses and carriages coming up from behind them. They heard the click-clack of horses hooves and the creaks of a wagon, growing louder and louder. As they rounded the next corner they pulled over to the side to allow the carriages to pass. The noise intensified as it rounded the corner and carried on past them, but nothing was there."
Epping Forest was notorious for highwaymen, robberies and murders and other sightings of ghostly horsemen and carriages are not uncommon in this area.
