Royal St. GeorgesDr Laidlaw Purves of the Royal Wimbledon Golf Club designed and established St Georges Club in 1887. Named St. George's, it was to become the English rival to Scotland's St. Andrew's. In 1894 the Club hosted its first British Open Championship, the first time the Open was played south of the Scottish border.
