Among the many great courses along the Northwest coast of England, Royal Birkdale stands out as a perfect example of links golf. It is currently the number one course in England and has been previously been voted the number one in Britain.
The Club was formed in 1889, starting life as a nine hole course. In 1897 the decision was taken to move to Birkdale Hills where an 18 hole course was constructed.
In 1991 a decision was taken to redesign and relay all the greens. This considerable improvement has enabled the club to retain its position as one of the finest links golf courses in the world.
The links measure 7,180 yards from the championship tee and although the distance itself is a test even for the best golfer, the blustery winds coming in from the sea, adds to the challenge. Royal Birkdale can provide a torrid time to golfers when the wind gets up. Wind speeds can regularly reach 30-40 mph, causing large waves to crash on the beach from the Irish Sea.
Royal Birkdale runs through a landscape of high dunes and from the tee there is generally a clear view of the task ahead. Each hole is very memorable, from The Open Championship tee the par 4 13th, measures 498 yards, one of the longest par 4's in championship golf. The fairways are generally flat, but fair, with difficult bunkering and thick rough providing the first line of defence should the winds be calm.
Visitors to the course walk in the footsteps of many of golf's legends such as Open Winners, Arnold Palmer, Lee Trevino, Johnny Miller, Tom Watson and Peter Thomson, a double winner at Royal Birkdale. On the 15th hole, a plaque commemorates Arnold Palmer's great shot in appealing weather conditions, on the way to winning the British Open in 1961. Royal Birkdale will again be hosting the British Open in 2008.
